Ceramics Study Tour to China, May, 2012

Trudy and Paul will lead a study tour that will travel to Shanghai and the ceramic centres of Jingdezhen and Xi'an. The fouteen-day itinerary will include a week-long, hands-on exploration of various porcelain techniques (including underglaze cobalt blue and stain painting, onglaze polychrome painting, underglaze transfer and onglaze decal) while in residence at the JDZ PWS Experimental Factory, Jingdezhen.

Visits to local shops will include ceramic tool, brush, glaze, silk box, decal and underglaze transfer makers. Having custom on-glaze decals or underglaze transfers made will also be an opportunity for participants. Local visits will include the JDZ Ceramic Museum, the Ancient HuTian Kiln Site, 'Big Pot Factory', and the SanBaoPeng water-driven Hammer Mill and Ceramic Institute. Side trips will include YaoLi, the TianBao dragon kiln, DongBu and GaoLing (Kaolin) mountain, and a visit to see the terracotta warriors in Xi'an. Lectures on the history of Chinese ceramics and porcelain will augment the learning experience. Studio visits with contemporary ceramic artists may include Carola Zee, and Wan Li-Ya and Adrian Rees (Four Step Snake). While in Shanghai we will visit the PWS, the Antique Market, YuYuan Garden, Shanghai Art Museum and the collection of historical ceramics in the Shanghai Museum.
